Winter is a cold in Jingdezhen. The type of cold that make one shiver and chatter. It is during this time when The Pottery Workshop Staff scrub our buildings, fix broken lockers, spruce up the showrooms and take care of all the overlooked details during the busy months. We have had, and will have 2 Resident Artists until Chinese New Year. One Dutch and one American. The Creative Market will run until the final Saturday in January, then resume the first Saturday of March. Design Studio is working on new projects and completing others in progress. Education Center is buying new equipment to supplement the increasing number of residents…new racks, trash cans, organizer tools, etc. We are also looking forward to inviting a couple more individuals to join our team in March. Many eager individuals are being interviewed…

We hope you can come visit us in 2013, as we have a very busy year ahead of us. For more information, please email infojdz@potteryworkshop.com.cn!!

My work is about movement and interaction. I draw and sculpt human and animal figures resting, dancing, fighting, or merely standing.

I portray them in their emotional moments of fear or awkwardness.

In the last two months I have depicted mostly animals: tigers, wolves, and apes. Each sculpture rests on a base to give it a sense of mightiness. As if we, humble creatures, should gather around it at nightfall and dance in silence.

Inge Bečka

www.ingebecka.com

As the daughter of an architect, I was raised to see and learn much about form and shape. Ceramics, especially stoneware, became the material of my own experimentation and expression.

My fascination for these shapes in porcelain, its tactility and strength, is seen in this exhibition.

The last two months at the Pottery Workshop have been a spree of inspiration.

Wil van Blokland

www.wilvanblokland.nl

My subject is contact between human beings.

The focus of my work is the essential form, like a capsule, an oval, a ring, or just a single, simple potato.

Abstraction helps me to understand our very complex world. Buddhism has inspired me during this period of work. I want to visualize the inner silence.

Carla Kesteloo

www.carlakesteloo.nl

I’ve always lived at the seaside. That is how I came to appreciate sea life, and to adopt it as a theme in my artwork. Fishes and jellyfishes are commonplace, for us on the Northern coast.

As a photographer, I want to invite people to look at things in daily life and recognize that they are special. It has been a great challenge to realize my theme in ceramics, here in Jingdezhen.

It’s all about personal bonds, joy, and inner beauty.

I’d like to dedicate my exhibition to my lovely parents.

Loren Erdrich

Johnson ，Vermont

“Oh , oh , my only one ”似乎是hip-hop的表达形式，结合韵律、说唱、涂鸦；也令人浮想联翩，仿若云雨之后恋人之间的呻吟。

3.“Bean Series#3”

Brian R . Jobe

Knoxville , Tennessee

4.“and Balls”

Dryden Wells

Shanghai , China

“cock”！ Cock and ball ！ 是的，just a joke ！

5.“Never Sorry”

Ryder Richards

Plano , Texas

6.“Untitle”

Sue Anne Rische

Plano , Texas

7．“Tommy”

Sarah Haven

Seattle , Washington

8.“Perro Loco Busca El Elixir De La Vida”

Jd Durham

San Marcos , Texas

9.“Cuttlefish”

Kale Roberts

Tampa , Florida

10.“Untitle”

Piotr Chizinski

Ithaca,New York

11.“The Line Between Two Dots”

Jonathan Whitfill

Lubbock , Texas

12.“Push”

Ian F . Thoms

Slioppey Rock , Pennsylvania

”Translation in Motion”

STATEMENT:

With this exhibition, we are interested in noticing differences and similarities in
separate cultures, from the idea of an object to its actual creation.

Our artistic group of Culture Laboratory are many different personalities bound
together by our personal differences, and the different type of work we
produce.

While even though we are striving to be a group, we want to all retain our
individual voices. We believe that what makes us strong, is the struggle to
retain our individuality as well as be strong as a group.

The “qing hua” painting, or blue & white painting process, was employed by the
painter commissioned by Culture Lab, Xiao Ma (small horse). Xiao Ma worked
closely with Culture Lab member Dryden Wells to capture the essence all the
images supplied by its 12 members. These works were made in Jingdezhen,
Jiang Xi province, China, the most famous city of Chinese ceramic / porcelain
art and production. The style of the ceramic decoration is called “Qing Hua”,
meaning, ‘blue paint on white background’. Qing Hua is one of the well-known
art styles of Jingdezhen porcelain. Cobalt, the mineral used to make the blue
color, is painted and applied on the raw ceramic ware in varying densities
of washes. Once the painting is finished, the tile is sprayed with a transparent
glaze. Finally, the tiles are red to approximately 1315 °C, making the image on
the tile permanent.

This show is a group of American Artists commissioning craft objects from
China, but not in what has become known in the USA as a “made in China”
object. We want to celebrate the uniqueness of individual one-of-a-kind objects,
while at the same time investigate what is gained or lost in translation between
cultures.

Through our Culture Lab liaison living and working in Jingdezhen, there was a
practical and sincere communication that resulted in unique and dynamic
products.

Using artists from across the globe to create an object from just an idea or
image is an exciting experiment and breed more diversity and originality into
the project.
